Your Questions Answered
Counselling comes under the term “talking therapy” and enables you to talk about what is worrying you or causing you distress, such worries can really effect your quality of life and can become debilitating, effecting your mental health. Talking to a qualified counsellor can help you put things into perspective, just being able to say what is on your mind and share that can be very therapeutic and powerful. The ultimate aim is for you to feel better, feel in control and heard.
Making the decision to seek counselling is a brave step, to get the best out of it ask yourself the following:
Am I ready to explore my feelings and emotions?
Do I feel ready to open up about my things that are personal, maybe distressing and hard to talk about?
Only you will know when the time is right, an initial session may help you decide if therapy is right for you.
Counselling is a very individual thing, and varies from person to person depending on what you need, how ready you are to talk about what is worrying you and the nature of your problems. As a guide many clients have between 8-12 sessions but some choose longer-term therapy and find that beneficial. Once we have discussed your individual situation I can advise you however it is ultimately your decision, my role to to work safely with you and review your goals on a regular basis to ensure the best outcomes.
You may be feeling anxious and be approaching this with some curiosity and some trepidation and that’s understandable. Coming to counselling when there are struggles in the relationship however minor, can change the dynamic for the better.
Relationship counselling takes commitment and time and some trust and belief in the process.
Overall the role of the Counsellor is to facilitate and encourage open dialogue, support you to be able to demonstrate empathy and avoid conflict. Communication is key in understanding and appreciating each other to overcome some of the issues you are facing . I will encourage you to think about what your shared goals and hopes for the future are, encouraging togetherness, empathy, shared meaning and reminding you of what works for you and how you can perhaps get back to that within your relationship.
All in a safe, confidential space.
